How To Mix Essential Oils With Carrier Oils

Technically, the exact ratio of essential oil to carrier oil will depend on the specific ones that you’re using. However, a good, general starting point is 15 drops of essential oil to 6 teaspoons of carrier oil. This will give you a 2.5% concentration.

You can go lower or higher depending on how strong you want the mixture to be.

For example:

  • 3% concentration will require 20 drops of essential oil to 6 teaspoons of carrier oil
  • 5% concentration will require 30 drops of essential oil to 6 teaspoons of carrier oil
  • 10% concentration will require 60 drops of essential oil to 6 teaspoons of carrier oil
  • 15% concentration will require 90 drops of essential oil to 6 teaspoons of carrier oil
  • 20% concentration will require 120 drops of essential oil to 6 teaspoons of carrier oil

Remember that it is always better to start with the lowest concentration. Make sure that your skin can handle it and then gradually increase it if you can or need to.

Also, always do a patch test first. Apply the oils to a small area of skin around or close to your belly button and see how you will feel. If you do not experience a negative reaction, then gradually add a small amount inside your belly button.

Disclaimer

Using oil in your belly button is not a scientific or medical technique. It is a herbal remedy that has been practiced in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine.

Therefore, there is no clinical evidence to prove that it can or cannot help certain symptoms. Most of the evidence is anecdotal (meaning it is based on the reports of users).

Do keep in mind that you should not practice naval oiling without consulting your doctor. Be especially cautious if you are pregnant or have abdominal cancers, cysts, masses or other underlying abdominal medical conditions.

It is not clinically proven whether we can really absorb oils through our belly buttons. But just in case we can, we have no idea how they would affect your very real medical conditions or pregnancy.

The technique itself can also cause some distress in its application depending on how it is done. So you need to be careful.
