Vichy Antiperspirants & Deodorants – Are They Effective

Vichy Antiperspirants & Deodorants – Are They Effective

Vichy Laboratories makes a wide range of antiperspirants and deodorants to help combat sweating and body odor.

Not only do they make traditional antiperspirants and deodorants, but they also make extra-strength ones (for maximum protection) and aluminum-free ones (for those who cannot or prefer not to use aluminum-based products).

But just how effective are they?

How Do Vichy Antiperspirants & Deodorants Work

Like all true antiperspirants, the main ingredient in the Vichy ones is Aluminum. The kind of aluminum and its concentration will vary for each product.

The traditional antiperspirants will all contain varying levels of Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate and Aluminum Chlorohydrate. Some will contain one OR the other, and the stronger ones will contain both. These include the:

  • 48-hour Soothing Antiperspirant Roll-on – Sensitive Skin
  • Beauty Deo Antiperspirant 48Hr
  • 48-hour Antiperspirant Deodorant – Aerosol
  • Anti-Perspirant 7-day Treatment Cream
  • 48-hour Intensive Antiperspirant Treatment – Roll-On
  • Stress Resist Antiperspirant Intensive Treatment 72-hour Roll-on
  • Clinical Control 96H For Men
  • Clinical Control 96H

The other ingredients include water, fragrance, preservatives, and some conditioning ingredients like Dimethicone to help soothe and soften your skin (also helps to avoid irritation).

The Aluminum-free deodorants will contain mineral salts. These include Magnesium and/or Zinc in different forms (magnesium oxide, magnesium Gluconate, Zinc Gluconate). Magnesium is the main, active ingredient. Vichy’s Mineral Salt Deodorants include:

  • Mineral Deodorant Spray
  • Mineral Deodorant Roll-On
  • 24-hour Deodorant Free From Aluminum Salts – Stick

All Vichy antiperspirants and deodorants are required by the law and the FDA to only use approved concentrations of aluminum, zinc and magnesium.

So, their products will not contain more than 25% Aluminum Chlorohydrate or more than 25% Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate.

If you are sensitive to aluminum, then their mineral salt deodorant options might be a better option for you.

How Effective Vichy Antiperspirants & Deodorants Are

The effectiveness of each Vichy Antiperspirant and deodorant may vary for every person. But generally, they are quite effective for people who are average sweaters.

Traditional Antiperspirants (With Aluminum)

Their extra strength formulas are great if you sweat excessively, but they would not hold up as well as some other brands in the face of severe hyperhidrosis.

The traditional antiperspirants lasted all day and they kept me dry, but I do not sweat too much on an average day. During my workout days, I did notice that the 48-hour one held up pretty well but I could feel a little sweat peeking through by midday the next day.

The 72-hour stress-resist antiperspirant held up well during a few days of hiking, but by the third day, I could feel and smell that I needed to reapply. But all in all, it was a good experience.

Many people also say that the 7-day treatment cream did a great job at controlling their sweat. Many of them had mild-moderate hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Aluminum-Free Deodorants (With magnesium instead)

The mineral salt deodorants worked amazingly well for me. As I said, I am not a big sweater, so I also do not produce much body odor. I also have sensitive skin and while I have not yet broken out when using aluminum antiperspirants, I am also looking for more skin-friendly products.

So, how did their aluminum-free deodorants work for me?

Firstly, I used this on days when I did not have to do excessive physical activity. Just a regular day: Commute, Work, socialize, commute, sleep.

Now here’s the thing, when it first went on, it was a bit itchy. Your skin is supposed to be completely dry when applying magnesium salt products and even aluminum products. So maybe that is why.

The itching eventually went away and I went about my day.

I was pleasantly surprised when I did a smell check around lunchtime. There was no noticeable odor and my pits were dry.

By the end of the day, however, I could begin to get a whiff of some odor (slight) and I could begin to feel just a little bit of dampness under my arms. Maybe checking made me more conscious, but by the time I got home, I was very ready to shower.

All in all, though, it was a good enough experience.

Side Effects Of Vichy Antiperspirants & Deodorants

The main side effect associated with Vichy antiperspirants and deodorants is irritation.

Most of Vichy’s products seem to be relatively well-tolerated by many. However, like all skincare products, certain ingredients in them can potentially cause irritation or even allergic reactions.

Please ensure that you read your product label to make sure that the ingredients in these products are not known to be an allergen or irritant for you.

Which Of Vichy’s Antiperspirants & Deodorants Will Be Best For You

Much like undies, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to antiperspirants and deodorants. However, some will suit you better than others.

If you sweat a lot and need additional protection, then the aluminum-based Vichy deodorants will work great for you. You just have to be careful and observe whether your skin will react to the ingredients in the product.

On the other hand, if you have super sensitive skin, their aluminum-free options are pretty great. The only downside here is that if you sweat a lot, or have hyperhidrosis, these will not work for you. They help to control sweat all day in people who generally do not sweat a lot.

Do any of the Vichy Antiperspirants or Deodorants lighten your underarms?

No. The Vichy antiperspirants and deodorants were not designed to lighten your underarms.

However, the aluminum-free ones contain citric acid, which is a mild AHA that gently cleanses and exfoliates the skin. Using this every day can make your underarms look more clean (which sometimes also means a little more toned and lighter).
